The annual Tree of Life pledge campaign provides an occasion for introspection, a time to look closely at what we are doing and to ask ourselves, “Are we Making a Difference?” This year’s drive will run March 10th- April 7th. As I was thinking about our pledge drive and what our financial commitments make possible, I found myself thinking about transpiration and tapping into our ground waters.
How did I get there? Well, first I was thinking about the aspirations of this community. Some of these aspirations are now coming to fruition, like finding a minister who is helping us reach out to the community, leading us in uplifting worship, and caring deeply for us. Another aspiration that is taking off is our new Welcoming Congregation Renewal which will ensure that our Congregation is acting to create a more just society and a more comfortable environment for all, particularly our LGBTQIA+ community. There are many more individual and community aspirations that I have not mentioned here. Aspirations are Tree of Life reaching for our future.
Our aspirations are rooted in our values of Love, Interdependence, Justice, Equity, Pluralism, Generosity, and Transformation, and we give them life when we support them with our money, our time, and our talent. I envision them as life-giving rain on the soil that surrounds the Tree of Life, giving nourishment to its roots. Can you see the roots of our tree reaching for that moisture and nourishment (tapping into its ground water) and pulling it up its trunk to achieve our aspirations (the process of transpiration)? Imagine the transformation as the water moves up the trunk funding programs, helping to fulfill our needs, and sustaining our community through your generous contributions! Imagine the transformation we can make in ourselves, McHenry County, and the wider world! Our transformation will make a difference in our personal spiritual lives, our daily interactions, and our work for justice and equity, all of it with joy and peace in our hearts.
This is the year to make a statement through your pledge: “I want to see Tree of Life make a difference and flourish!” With Love at the center, let your aspirations for Tree of Life transform your commitment to nourish our Tree of Life community. We have a lofty goal of $180,000 in pledges from our members and friends. To get there, we will need most of you to increase your giving by a substantial amount. If your circumstances allow you to be one of those that can make a generous increase, please do so. Our extraordinarily generous, now sadly deceased, member and friend, Don Metivier, provided a five-year pledge which ends on June 30, 2024. Now it is up to us to fulfill his and our vision of a vibrant and loving community that takes care of its members, stands for Justice and Equity, and is grounded in a faith with Love at the center. Please make your pledge today to transform tomorrow.
